National O.O.Bohomolets Medical University is one of the oldest establishments of higher medical education in Ukraine: the official pages of its chronicle Medical University started in 1841, when Medical Faculty affiliated to St. Volodymyr’s University was established.


At all stages of University’s development the prominent figures and well-known in the world research and pedagogical schools contributed much to its pride and prestige. Among those, who were directly connected with the NMU there were V.O. Karavayev, V.P. Obraztsov, O.O. Bohomolets, M.M. Amosov and entire galaxy of significant in the world medical professionals.


Nowadays the University is, first of all, the highly qualified academic staff body, amalgamating 12 Faculties and 78 Departments.


Lectures of the teachers and researchers from the leading European and US universities were conducted at the NMU on the basis of provided here policy of active international collaboration; at the same time during 2008-2009 intellectual achievements of the NMU professors were presented to the colleagues in Oxford university (the UK) and in Karolinski Institutet (Kingdom of Sweden).


The National O.O.Bohomolets Medical University concluded 37 agreements with international and foreign organizations and institutions, it is a co-founder of the inter-university Centre of Science and co-operation of South and South-East European countries (Italy), of South-East network of Universities (Poland), participant of 27 educational and 48 Scientific International Projects.

The University is the only higher medical educational establishment of Ukraine, which has became the partner of the European Union program “Erasmus Mundus”, providing students opportunities of training and teachers of improving their professional skills abroad.


There is being realized training and research program of young scientist’s training jointly with Karolinski Institutet (Sweden), and at the phase of discussion is the project of Masters training according to the fragment of the Oxford University’s “Global Health” program.


The English medium instruction in specialities “General Medicine” and “Dentistry” for students from the USA, Sweden, Poland, Turkey, India, Lebanon, Kuwait, Ghana has been introduced at the University in 2004; due to the prospects of this form of education there is foreseen to increase admission, to implement English medium instruction in speciality “Pharmacy” starting from 2010/2011 academic year as well as to give Ukrainian citizens opportunity of studying medicine in English.


The Ukrainian Training Center of Family Medicine functions here since 2005. In 2007 there was established combined Faculty of training physicians in sphere of physical culture and sports of National O.O. Bohomolets Medical University and National University of Physical Training and Sports of Ukraine.

The broad system of pre-University training includes training at the Ukrainian Medical Lyceum of the NMU and at Preparatory Courses of different duration, including those with distance form of education with corresponding training and methodic supply.


The university has a powerful material and technical base. It includes 9 training buildings, lecture halls for 2800 seats, library with Internet centre, 18 computer rooms, the Dentistry Medical Centre comprising 300 dentists’ chairs, Museum of History of Medicine of the NMU, 7 dormitory buildings, 9 students’ cafeteria and canteens, Preventive medical facility for 75 places, Sports camp for 400 places.

In 2007 there has been started construction of the new Training and Laboratory Center comprising library, new dormitory building. Clinical departments of the University are placed at 138 clinical bases , there annually undergo treatment nearly 250 000 patients, are assisted more than 12000 deliveries and are conducted nearly 60000 surgical interventions. There are above 350000 attendancies to the largest in Europe Training Dentistry Medical Center annually.


Nowadays there are nearly 10000 undergraduate and post-graduate students, clinical ordinators (residents), Master students, intern physicians (pharmacists) including nearly 1200 foreign citizens from 54 countries of the world.

The graduates of the University are employed in every fourth country of the world, enriching by their work treasury of the NMU achievements and spreading its high reputation far beyond the borders of Ukraine.


National O.O.Bohomolets Medical University is a repeated winner of the All-Ukrainian rating of higher medical educational institutions “Sofia Kyivs’ka”, international exhibitions of educational institutions “Contemporary education in Ukraine”, where it was awarded with the Gold medals during 5 years in succession (2005-2009).

The honorary titles “Leader of contemporary education” (2005-2006), “Leader of national education” (2008), “Leader in creation of contemporary means of training”(2009) were conferred on it.

According to the State rating of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine the National O.O.Bohomolets Medical University has won the 1-st place among higher medical educational establishments of the III –IY-th level of accreditation (Health Care), and 11-th place in the state rating of the higher educational establishments “ Ukraine, top-200”.

In 2008 the University has won the 3-rd place in state rating of higher educational establishments “Ukraine, top 200”.

In 2009 on “Education and Career-2009” exhibition in the nomination “International co-operation in sphere of science and technology” the Gold Medal was awarded to the University.
